This guide walks you through how to use SimCapture for Skills to practice clinical skills with a peer using two separate devices.
Use this option when both learners have their own device, such as for remote, flexible, or asynchronous peer practice.
If you’re looking to practice on your own, see SimCapture for Skills: How to Use the Self‑Record Feature.
Before You Begin
Before starting a two‑device peer practice session, make sure you have:
- Your own device with a web browser (smartphone, tablet, or computer)
- A stable internet connection
- Access to a course and skill that supports peer practice
- A peer available to observe and evaluate your performance
Peer‑to‑Peer Roles (Two Devices)
Each learner uses their own device and has a specific role:
| Role | What They Do |
|---|---|
| Learner | Performs the skill being assessed |
| Observer | Evaluates the performance using a skills checklist |
Both learners can repeat the workflow later to switch roles and receive practice credit.
Step 1: Log In
Go to your SimCapture for Skills site:
https://[yourorganization].simcapture.com/skills
Log in using your organization’s credentials.
Step 2: Choose a Skill
From Your Course List:
- Select a skill that supports peer practice (not a self‑record skill)
- Review the Overview and Learning Objectives
Step 3: Start a Two‑Device Peer Practice Session
- Select Practice
- Choose Practice with a Peer
- Select Two Devices as the pairing method
- Generate the pairing code
- Share the code with your Observer
Step 4: Pair Devices
Observer Steps
- Log in to SimCapture for Skills
- Select Observe a Peer
- Enter the pairing code shared by the Learner
If a pre‑reflection is configured, the Observer is prompted to complete it once the evaluation begins.
Step 5: Begin Practice
Once the Observer selects Keep This Session, the Learner selects Begin Practice to start the evaluation.
What Happens During the Evaluation
During the session:
- The Observer views the skills checklist on their device
- The Learner performs the skill
- The Observer marks each checklist item as Complete or Incomplete
- When finished, the Observer selects Submit Checklist
The Learner will see a Checklist Completed confirmation.
Comments and Reflections
Some checklist questions may include a comment icon.
Comments and reflections may appear in:
- Pre‑ or post‑reflections
- Live checklist items
- Session feedback
Viewing Session Feedback
After submission, the Learner can review detailed feedback for each item:
- Done – Full credit
- Partially Done – Partial credit
- Missed – No credit
- Unscored – No point value assigned
Select the dropdown arrow next to a question to view item‑level feedback.
Understanding Your Score
Your scoring screen includes:
- Total score
- Date and number of attempts
- Previous high score
- Session duration (timer)
- Score breakdown by question category
- Detailed feedback by category
Score Colors
- Green – New high score
- Black – Same as a previous score
- Orange – Lower than a previous high score
The timer reflects how long the session lasted and may be used for time‑based assessments.
Question Categories
Checklist questions may be grouped into categories (such as QSEN competencies).
Categories help:
- Identify strengths and areas for improvement
- Track progress over time
- Focus future practice sessions
This information is visible to both learners and administrators.
