Things to Know Before You Begin

The Control Interface in SimCapture Enterprise allows administrators to configure and manage exam sessions, assign standardized patients (SPs), and monitor live encounters. Before you begin:

  • Only users with the appropriate permissions can access the Control Interface.
  • The layout is customizable to suit your workflow.
  • Rooms must be configured before starting an exam session.

Granting Access to the Control Interface

As a System Administrator, follow these steps to grant access:

  1. Click the gear icon to open your organization’s System Setup.
  2. Scroll to the Exams section.
  3. Click Permissions.
  4. Click Edit, search for the user, and assign them as an Administrator under Access Control Interface.
  5. Click Save.

You can also determine whether learners need a password to log into exams during this setup.

Navigating the Control Interface

Once logged in as an Administrator:

  1. Click Control in the global navigation bar.
  2. The main Control Interface screen will open.

Layout Options

At the top of the screen, you’ll find layout buttons:

  • Floorplan Only – Displays a grid layout of rooms.
  • Vertical Split – Shows the floorplan on the left and room list on the right.
  • Horizontal Split – Displays the floorplan at the top and room list at the bottom.
  • List Only – Shows only the list of rooms.

A lock symbol appears on rooms that are in use (started via ad-hoc or scheduled session), indicating they cannot be edited.

Configuring a Room

To configure a room:

  1. Click the kebab menu (three dots) next to the room name.
  2. Select Configure Room.
  3. Fill out the configuration form:
    • Course – Select the course associated with the scenario.
    • Scenario – Choose from available scenarios with an exam flow.
    • Patient – Assign a standardized patient (SP). If none are configured, click the link to set one up.
    • In-Room Evaluator – Assign a faculty member who is a Course Contributor.
    • Color – (Optional) Assign a color for filtering rooms in the interface.
  4. Click Save, or Save and next to move to the next unconfigured room.

If Skip Configured Rooms is checked, the system will skip rooms that are already set up.

You can also customize visible columns in the interface by clicking the gear icon and selecting your preferences. These settings are saved per user.

Running an Exam Session

Once a room is configured:

  1. Click Start Encounter to begin the session.
  2. The room status will update with a colored indicator:
    • Blue – Pre-Encounter
    • Red – Encounter in progress
    • Purple – Post-Encounter
  3. Click the video camera icon to open the Monitor Interface for live viewing, annotations, and evaluations.

Monitor Interfaces can be accessed from anywhere on the SimCapture Central network. Learner and SP workstations are dedicated and used only during exam sessions.
